Oued

Rivierbeddingen worden in Noord Afrika Oued genoemd. Water is in de woestijn van levensbelang en wordt met veel respect behandeld.
Onderweg tijdens mijn tochten kreeg ik vaak zakjes met hennapoeder cadeau. Ik gebruikte de henna voor de installatie Oued, vanwege mijn herinneringen en de symbolische waarden, de aardse kleur en ook de helende krachten die aan henna worden toegekend. Bij botbreuken gebruikte men henna i.p.v. gips om de breuk te spalken. Na droging wordt de hennapap keihard.

River beds are called Oued in North Africa. Water is of vital importance in the desert and is treated with lots of respect. I often received gifts of little bags of henna powder along the way on my journeys. I used the henna for the Oued installation, because of my memories, the symbolic value, the earthly colour and also because of the healing powers ascribed to henna. Henna was used for fractures instead of plaster to splint the bone. The henna paste turns hard as a brick after it dries.
